Oct 22.2009 - Messina, Sicily DKP: Sicily, I am told, is it's own version of Italy. I guess I can see this in it's people, it's structures, it's food - for sure. Cannoli, need I say more :-)) THE BEST! Nothing beats Sicilian Cannoli. In true organic fashion, we met a friend up on the Lido while having breakfast. As the conversation winded through the details of her life, it somehow came to her telling us what we should see in Messina. We managed to meet her on the Pier where she then led us up into the neighborhoods of Messina. Conveniently, our friend speaks 5+ languages, Italian being one of them. We hit the ATM, got a quick tour of the lower city, bought some fresh produce and local samples of formaggio and pomodora pouches, resembling healthy "hot pockets." Again, there seems no way to find bad flavors in Italy. This is what I love most about Europe. You stroll, you eat... there's always something new to try, anywhere you turn, always some new alley way to wind your way down in child-like discovery. In this spirit and with our senses open, we set out on the big climb to the church at the top of the hill. On the way, we found fountains, stairways, gardens and views of the ship, port and city - spectacular for sure. My favorite and most memorable moment was passing by the school where the parents were standing waiting to receive their children as they ran down the stairs. Once found, parent and child would walk down the walkway together discussing their experiences. This is something from another time in our country of SUVs and after-school programs and early college applications. I loved seeing this, I prefer it and I miss it. PLEASE NOTE: Due to back to back ports, we are posting our blogs as quickly as possible. Thanks for your understanding and patience. |
